The internet is born to travelers, who can Research exotic (and not so exotic) destinations online. With a few clicks, we can buy flights tickets, read restaurant, reviews and book a table at some five star restaurant, or look at Webcam pictures of beaches. Today, the challenge isn’t so finding information as it is making sense of the massive amount available. As a traveler, I am constantly asked questions like this, “My family and I wish to go to Europe. We are going to Italy, France, Spain. What should we be sure to see? “The next question is so enormous, I don’t know how to begin to answer, “Don’t miss Paris“? “You love London“? But I know what those folks want. They want a trusted source, a friend who has been there, someone who can advise them on what not to miss in the limited amount of time they have for a visit. And they don’t have the time to read a half dozen guidebook or visit 60 websites that may or may not be reliable. And that’s where we come in. It is an entertaining stroll through the top hits of hundred countries, with a side of helpful information on climate, travel resources that let you know the relative distance between, say, Rome, and Venice or Naples. It’s a terrific starting point that a traveler may used to go the next step--If pubs are of interest to you when visiting London, hundred countries, 5000 ideas list the best neighborhoods; you can take it from there with a quick internet search that will deliver you names, addresses, reviews of specific pubs.
Writer and traveler, Paul Theroux, once suggested that the trips one remembers the most, are the ones where something goes wrong. He’s mostly right. But when life on the road cost hard-earned money, as it does for most of us, and when it must be accomplished in a limited amount of time, as it must be for most of us, an overall understanding of a destination and basic information are helpful starting points for any traveler. I have my own system for getting to know a city. That’s new to me if I arrive without benefit of much preparation, identify but don’t necessarily stay at the fanciest hotel in town. It’s often in the center of the best neighborhood; taxi driver know how to find it. In case I get lost and I don’t know the language and there are usually too important attributes of that hotel, clean, restroom and concierge desk with helpful staff, who, if approached with a smile and a tip, maybe willing to help with directions and recommendations. When it comes to restaurants, I always ask, “don’t tell me where you sent tourist…. Tell me where you eat, and where you take your spouse for an anniversary dinner.” You’re welcome to borrow my technique when you land in new destinations, but before you go, First Trip is your trusted source.
